High Results are consistent with the presence of a fully functional corpus luteum (CL). Samples taken within 24 hours of a prostaglandin injection should contain HIGH levels of Progesterone.
Low Results are consistent with the absence of a fully functional CL. Samples taken within 24 hours of AI should contain LOW levels of Progesterone.
Estrous synchronization programs require cycling cows to respond properly to hormone injections. The presence of circulating Progesterone indicates reproductive cyclicity and the presence of a functional CL capable of responding to synchronization programs. For successful breeding (AI), the absence of a functional CL is required.
The percentage of Progesterone values that fall outside of their expected values is indicative of noncompliance, either due to anestrous or improper synchronization protocols.
