Internship Opportunity – Applications due November 28, 2011

Seven month internship program providing students an in-depth and thorough understanding of NorthStar Cooperative.

The first half of the internship will be spent gaining experience in the DHI (Dairy Herd Information) business unit, working primarily at Universal Laboratory. This entails quality control, customer service and milk testing. Time may also be spent shadowing a DHI Specialist, conducting on-farm milk sampling and assisting with record keeping. Interns will learn to utilize herd management software and will be able to follow the DHI process from start to finish.

The second half of the internship will be spent working 50% of the time at Universal Lab and the other 50% working in the A.I. business unit or doing field work with the DHI business unit. While working in the A.I. business unit, interns may receive training in artificial insemination, direct sales, customer service and other reproductive services. While shadowing current NorthStar Cooperative Specialists, interns would become familiar with the reproductive physiology and anatomy of cattle and gain an understanding of safe semen handling procedures. They would also be exposed to dairy herd management software, implementation of synchronization protocols, and learn valuable business skills such as inventory and time management and salesmanship.

Additional training may be available based on the intern’s specific interests.

Duration:
  • 10-20 hours/week January thru May
  • up to 36 hours/week May thru August

At the conclusion of the internship period, an Intern Evaluation will be conducted. Further employment opportunities may be extended based on overall successful evaluation ratings and position availability.

Qualifications:
  • Student holding junior or senior status in Animal Science, Ag Business or comparable major
  • Good computer skills including but not limited to word processing, spreadsheets, and email
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds
