Sabo Named Select Sires Evaluator of the Year

PLAIN CITY, Ohio, June 24, 2008 — Dale Sabo, DePere, Wis., is Select Sires’ 2008 Select Mating Service™ (SMS™) Evaluator of the Year. Sabo received this honor at the Select Sires annual SMS Evaluators’ Conference, held in May in Wisconsin.

This national award is presented to an evaluator that exemplifies the qualities that make SMS known world-wide as the premier mating program in the industry. The recipient must have years of superior service, a history of high-quality evaluations and the ability to build and maintain successful relationships with dairy producers.

The key to designing genetic business plans on today’s dairy operations starts with skilled, experienced evaluators. “Dale has earned the respect and confidence from his dairy customers for his help in designing breeding programs that fit each customer’s genetic goals. He enjoys this industry, his relationships with customers and seeing the milking results in their herds. Dale is truly successful due to his keen desire to help each and every dairy customer,” said Lon Peters, vice president, dairy sire product services manager for Select Sires. Gary Smith, general manager for NorthStar Cooperative added: “Dale’s influence, integrity and cow knowledge have been key to the success that NorthStar and Select Sires have enjoyed in Wisconsin. From all of us at NorthStar Cooperative, we congratulate Dale on this well-deserved honor.”

Sabo was born and raised on a family dairy near Green Bay, Wis., and earned a bachelor’s degree in dairy science from the University of Wisconsin in 1968. While in college, Dale was a member of the University of Wisconsin dairy judging team. He began working in the industry as a youth extension agent and coached very successful 4-H dairy judging teams and dairy quiz bowl teams. Sabo began Sunrise-Sunset Holsteins, and from 1974 through 1986, developed numerous Excellent cows and district show champions, ultimately earning many premier breeder and premier exhibitor awards. Additionally, Sabo is an accredited dairy judge and has judged numerous county fairs and district Holstein shows and served as the associate judge of the Wisconsin State Junior Fair Holstein Show.

Sabo began his career in A.I. at Genex Cooperative, working with the mating program. He then joined Alta Genetics as a sire analyst, where he was responsible for the acquisition of Norrielake Cleitus Luke. In 1993, Sabo joined the Select Sires family at NorthStar Cooperative as an SMS evaluator. He provides SMS and Program for Genetic Advancement™ (PGA™) service to some of NorthStar Cooperative’s largest customers in Northeastern and Central Wisconsin.

Sabo has been married to his wife, Diane, for 39 years and they have four children: Stephanie, Bridget, Heather and Erik. He and his family have been lifetime season-ticket holders for Green Bay Packers home games and fondly remember attending the famous “Ice Bowl” in 1967.

Since 1973, SMS has provided dairy producers with a labor saving, user-friendly approach to mating programs. Professional SMS evaluators work with herd managers to understand breeding objectives, evaluate each animal individually and use research and computerized analysis to develop matings.
