BioPRYN® Blood Pregnancy Testing
BioTracking, LLC, and its certified affiliated laboratories around the world offer a fast, accurate, safe and economical pregnancy test with BioPRYN®. The blood-based test uses an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to evaluate ruminant blood samples for pregnancy. BioPRYN was developed by Dr. Garth Sasser, an emeritus University of Idaho animal science professor. The test evaluates blood (specifically the serum or plasma) for the presence of pregnancy specific protein B (PSPB). This is unlike other tests previously available which attempted to diagnose pregnancy by evaluating blood or milk for hormones or proteins that occur in normally cycling animals. The source of PSPB is the placenta.
- Cows and heifers must be 30 days post-breeding and cows - 90 days post-calving. There is a chance for a false positive if the residual PSPB has not cleared the maternal system from cows that have calved more recently than 90 days ago.
- For recipients of an embryo transplant, collecting blood at 32 days of embryo age rather than 30 days is recommended.
- Use a fresh bleeding needle with every cow. Cross-contamination of blood will affect the results.

- Recheck pregnant cows tested at 30-35 days again between 60-70 days as a certain percentage will experience early embryonic death loss. Confirmation pregnancy checks are very important for this reason.
- Overall accuracy rate of the test is 97%, with 99% accuracy detecting open animals and 95% accuracy detecting pregnant animals.
